Tanking is nothing new that shit has been going on since Houston tanked to get Ralph Sampson. That's why they created the lottery system back in the day for those young fans that don't know the history. TRUST THE PROCESS took it to another level though and popularized it so damn much the NBA had to find a way to level the playing field on draft lottery night. I personally love watching tanking teams and believe in the PROCESS of it. Not every franchise is lucky enough to be like the Lakers who can consistently scoop up all the best talent decade after decade and compete for a title. Tanking and doing a successful rebuild is something any GM can do to become a contender if he's smart enough at evaluating talent.
Agreed, tanking has been around forever and no matter what the NBA does, people will find a way to maximize their odds of getting the No. 1 pick. As someone who loves the draft, I too don't have an issue with it. But the draft is tough. So many misses. You have to get it right.
"According to @ShamsCharania, #NBADraft PF Isaiah Todd is canceling workouts with teams in the late 1st round, such as the #UtahJaz #Jazz (#30), because he is now focusing on teams with lottery picks."
Interesting podcast but wondering if you could clarify some points re: the book. It appears the book is about tanking. However, under Vivek the Kings have never tanked and have always been focused on making the play-offs above all else. If Hinkie had the longest perspective in the room, Vivek could well have the shortest. But being organizationally bad and constantly finishing 8-12 is not tanking.
I don't think Jake was implying that the Kings were tanking. He just used them as an alternative way to look at teams that were trying to rebuild. Sixers, Celtics, Suns, Kings, Cavs were all taking different approaches with the same goal in mind -- turn a bad team into a championship contender.
Oh I see. Well the Kings are a great counterpoint to those who complain about tanking as they have been bad forever. Of course if Vlade could draft after he got lucky twice it would have help.
True or False: The '20-21 Pistons were the greatest tank job in NBA history. (Answer: True)
False- not even close. I assume that was a sarcastic comment.
