The first day of the 2024 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament brought a flurry of surprises, upsets, and thrilling finishes, setting the stage for an exciting competition ahead.

A notable upset took center stage as the third-seeded Kentucky Wildcats, boasting a roster filled with NBA-caliber talent, were shocked by the 14th-seeded Oakland team with a final score of 80-76 in the South region. This marked another unexpected turn for Kentucky coach John Calipari, who has faced upset losses to St. Peters and now Oakland in the NCAA Tournament over the last three seasons, managing only one tournament win in four seasons.

In other upsets, the sixth-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks suffered a defeat at the hands of the 11th-seeded Oregon Ducks, falling 87-73 in the Midwest region. Similarly, the sixth-seeded BYU Cougars were unable to overcome the challenge posed by the 11th-seeded Duquesne Dukes, losing 71-67 in the East region. Adding to the surprises, another sixth-seed, Texas Tech, was ousted by the 11th-seeded N.C. State Wolfpack with a score of 80-67 in the South region.

The excitement continues into Friday with 16 more games on the schedule, featuring top seeds UConn, Purdue, and Houston taking the court. The stage is set for more thrilling matchups and potential upsets as the tournament action unfolds.
