Fabian Kayser entered the summer with plenty of momentum, but an uneven EuroBasket reminded me there’s still work to do.

Kayser entered the summer as one of my top prospects in the 2009 generation and the 2028 NBA Draft class. With Nikola Kusturica heading to UCLA and Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje at Duke, I viewed this summer as an opportunity for Kayser to establish himself as the top 2009 born prospect remaining in Europe. He entered with plenty of momentum following several strong performances for Real Madrid last spring, but had an uneven showing at the FIBA U18 EuroBasket.
Kayser was brilliant against Slovenia and Stefan Joksimovic, flashing the size, skill and versatility that make him such an intriguing long-term prospect, but struggled throughout much of the rest of the tournament. He finished averaging 10 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting just 31% from the field and 31% from three. Still, there’s far too much to like about his combination of positional size, feel, passing and shooting potential to overreact to one bad week of basketball.
