Preliminary Report:
If there is a favorite to be the No. 1 pick, it’s Holmgren.
Holmgren is hard to describe. He’s a super-skinny 7-footer who is a monster rim protector and a budding offensive force — he can handle the ball and shoot the 3. He lacks strength, but he’s not soft.
He has a great feel for the game and has shown he can dominate, most recently for Team USA in the U19 World Cup in July. In that tournament, Holmgren led his team to the gold medal, was named MVP and averaged 11.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 3.3 apg and 2.7 bpg in 20 mpg and shot 54% from 3-point range and 65% from the field overall.
If he were packing another 20-30 pounds of muscle, we would be talking about a generational prospect. But that wiry frame leaves scouts wondering exactly what he will be in the NBA.
“Maybe he’s Kevin Garnett,” one scout said. “Maybe he’s Poku [Aleksej Pokuševski]. It’s so hard to know with him.
“You look at his body and think, ‘That’s not going to work in the NBA,’ and then you watch him play and you can’t take your eyes off him. I’m going to see every game I can see him this year, because you’ve got to be sure if he’s the top pick.”
